Reading is Hard

How to start a habit of reading.

I am a very lazy person. I was completely against the concept of reading books. But all the hype and greatness about reading pushed me to start reading. At times I would start to read a book and after 20–30 pages I’m tired and I would stop entirely reading for many days and wouldn’t touch that book again.

Then one day as I was commuting to college I realized that I waste almost 2 hours a day when traveling. I could surely use that time to do something productive. Then it clicked to me the idea of reading books and articles at that time. I opened up an article on Wait But Why called “The Tail End” by Tim Urban, reading it didn’t feel tired, it felt awesome.

I read it completely and started to binge other articles by Tim. Reading stuff that interests you can make a big difference. I’m into self-improvement and nonfiction. Find your taste in books or articles that keeps you concentrated.

Don’t overthink what form to read like audiobooks, digital copies, hardcover, or paperbacks. Just choose what’s convenient and start. If you are available with an old magazine read it if you can get a kindle, go for it. All the output would be the same it’s just personal preference and convenience. I like physical books but prefer reading digital copies on my phone as I carry it everywhere.

Find a subject you’re interested in, start reading a small article, and if the interest builds up read a book about it. If it does not interest you try a different niche. The goal is to start small and try out different subjects. Starting small helps you get rid of the stress of finishing up a 300-page book to just getting value out of a single paragraph that you read.

Get started on your reading journey towards the end goal of acquiring wisdom. I have linked some of the articles to get started check them out if interested. Cheers!
